March 2008 Monthly Meeting Report On March 11, we met with representatives from Maynard Girl Scouts and Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts. The Maynard Girl Scouts, a division of Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts, helps local girls to build character and skills for success in the real world. Working in small groups led by trained and dedicated adult volunteers, the girls learn the value of community service and develop a strong sense of social awareness and responsibility. In the town of Maynard, 188 girls and 58 adult volunteers in 20 troops participated in Girl Scouting in 2007. Maynard Girl Scouts often start participating at a young age as Daisies and many continue through high school, earning opportunities to work on service projects throughout the world. Funds from the Maynard Community Chest have contributed to scholarships for summer camp and town-wide events, lowering the fees for town-wide events for all girls and sponsorship of girls who might not otherwise be able to afford basic participation costs. Annual Meeting/Celebrating 40 years Representatives from the local charitable agencies we support at the Maynard Community Chest Annual Meeting on February 12, 2008 at the Maynard Public LIbrary. Senator Pam Resor (4th from the right) also attended.
Maynard Community Chest announces 2 new members of our Board of Directors We are so pleased to announce that Lauren Tetreault and Stacey Brooks have both joined our Board of Directors as of our December 2007 meeting. Lauren Tetreault is the Vice President of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage and has been a local Realtor since 1981. Born and raised in Lincoln, MA, Lauren recognized that Maynard was the place to live if one wants a community of diverse, creative, hardworking and intelligent people to neighbor with, and she has been a proud resident of Maynard for more than 20 years. Lauren says, "I became involved in the Maynard Community Chest because I think it reflects the evolving nature of our great community and I wanted to be a part of that growth and evolution. I like the grassroots approach of supporting organizations that not only help solve problems for some in our community but also are proactive about bettering our community." Stacey Brooks moved to Maynard with her husband, Jay, from Atlanta, GA, in fall of 2006 but was no stranger to the area since she grew up down the road in Acton. When she first started house-hunting with Lauren Tetreault, she was thrilled to see how much Maynard had developed over the years while still maintaining its small-town charm. Stacey says, "The more residents that I met, the more I wanted to become a more active participant in our special town. I researched the Maynard Community Chest online and decided to attend a meeting in October to get a first-hand look. After meeting the Board Members and hearing presentations from two sponsored agencies, I was convinced of the MCC's sincerity, commitment, and impact. All the money collected from the community is given right back, distributed to a variety of local agencies that support our residents of all backgrounds, in every phase of life. I am very excited to be a part of this important group, and I hope to welcome in other volunteers who share an interest in strengthening the Maynard community." We are thrilled to have Lauren and Stacey on Board and greatly appreciate all that they have already contributed to our organization. If any of you are interested in getting involved, please come to any of our monthly meetings. We welcome anyone who cares about the Maynard community. We are particularly interested in finding someone who is, perhaps, a financial advisor and could help us look at the financial big picture as we revitalize the Maynard Community Chest. 40th Anniversary Annual Campaign 2007-08 Update Thank you so much to all of you who supported our 40th Anniversary Annual Campaign 2007-08. As of December 31, 2007, we had raised over $31,700 including individual and business donations and pledges, meaning we are on track to reach our goal of distributing at least $35,000 to the 19 local charitable agencies we support in 2008! Thank you to the Beacon-Villager for their article on our 40th Anniversary, and for printing President Shari Belanger’s letter to the editor in December 2007. Donations have been made to our 2007-08 Annual Campaign

40th Anniversary Annual Campaign Update Our 40th Anniversary Annual Campaign has started off with a bang! Our Annual Campaign mailing to all Maynard residents and businesses went out in mid-October and we’ve already received more than $8,400 in donations (more than double where we were last year at this time) but we still need everyone’s support to reach (or surpass?) our goal of distributing at least $35,000 to the 19 local charitable agencies we support in 2008 We hope you will all support our Annual Campaign in whatever way you are able. If, for some reason, you did not receive our mailing, go to http://www.maynardchest.org and follow the links to "Campaign Information" and "Print Donation Form" right on our home page. We went with a different mailing firm this year and there have been some errors in the names associated with some addresses. We sincerely apologize if your mailing did not have the proper name on it. Fill out the donation form with your correct information and we’ll do our best to make sure mail is addressed correctly in the future. Thank you, once again, to Clock Tower Place for underwriting the cost of our Annual Campaign mailing so that the money you donate goes directly to the agencies we support. Thank you to all of you who are displaying "Support Maynard Community Chest" lawn signs in your yard. We will come by to pick those up by mid-November. Support from CVS Paul Liebfried, manager of the CVS store in Maynard, contacted us recently to offer a "collecting change" campaign at his store in support of the Maynard Community Chest. Cashiers at CVS will gently ask people if they would like to donate their change to the Maynard Community Chest from now through mid-November and then again in most of December. These types of campaigns have been known to collect close to $1,000. Paul hopes it will be very successful for us, particularly in the holiday season when they get a lot of foot traffic in their store. We are so thankful for CVS' support! 40th Anniversary Annual Campaign kicking off The Maynard Community Chest celebrates its 40th year of strengthening our community this fall. A group of civic-minded Maynard residents founded the Community Chest in 1967 to ensure that a broad range of human services is available to the people of Maynard. We are still an all-volunteer organization working hard to keep Maynard strong. A town-wide mailing will arrive in your mailbox this month. We hope you will support the Community Chest in whatever way you can and thank many of your for your ongoing and generous support. A very warm thank you goes to Lana Kurtz of LKPortraits.net, a Maynard resident, for designing this year’s Annual Campaign mailing and to Clock Tower Place/ Wellesley Management for covering the cost of our town-wide mailing so that we can keep our administrative costs next to nothing. Maynard Downtown!!! Wellness Day Report: October 20, 2007 Thank you so much to the following Maynard businesses who donated items or certificates to our Wellness Day Raffle:
Community Chest Board Members and volunteers at Wellness Day
Lend a hand to the Maynard Community Chest We’re looking for people to lend a hand in a variety of ways. E-mail us at info@maynardchest.org if you can help us out with any of the following (see below for details):
We’re getting new full-color posters (8.5 x 11) printed up as well (thanks to Lana Kurtz, again, for the design). If you can display a poster and/or a pile of Maynard Community Chest brochures anywhere in town, let us know how many you can take. In return for the Maynard Downtown!!! businesses’ willingness to raise money for the Community Chest, we will be setting up a booth in a central location downtown for Wellness Day and are looking for volunteers to spend an hour or two with us passing out brochures. We’d also like to have some sort of activitiy at our booth and are wondering if anyone would be willing to donate some time to do face painting, fake tattoos, stamping or anything like that- anything to draw people over to spend a few minutes learning about the Community Chest. 5th Annual Community Chest Challenge Triathlon
We would like to thank everyone who participated in or supported our 5th Annual Community Chest Challenge Triathlon held on June 3, 2007 at the North Bridge in Concord. At this year’s Community Chest Challenge, 4 teams representing Maynard biked, ran and paddled, raising a combined total of just over $3,700 for the Maynard Community Chest! Those of us who participated as athletes or race-day volunteers enjoyed a wonderful day of activity, scenery and, most of all, community. The Community Chest Challenge is a team triathlon fundraiser benefiting the human service agencies supported by the Community Chests of Concord-Carlisle and Maynard. Donations made in support of the Maynard teams strengthen our community by supporting local charitable agencies that provide a broad range of essential human services to people who live or work in Maynard. You can view and purchase this year’s triathlon photos online at http://www.lkportraits.net. LKPortraits will donate 5% of its net profit from the sale of triathlon photos to the Community Chest organizations. The Maynard Community Chest is excited to announce our partnership with The Abitibi Paper Retriever company, who has located two yellow and green paper recycling containers in Maynard; one in the Main Street parking lot of the Clock Tower Place (directly across from Quarterdeck Seafood and Ray & Son’s Cyclery) and the other in the Maynard High School parking lot. This recycling container accepts all kinds of paper: magazines, catalogs, newspaper, mail, office & school papers (ALL dry paper EXCEPT for phone books and corrugated cardboard). Please take the time to drop your paper recycling in that container, and Abitibi Paper Retriever will send the Maynard Community Chest a monthly check as a thank you for helping them to collect the paper they need as a raw material for their business. The Abitibi Paper Retriever company (www.paperretriever.com) manages very successful local fundraising/paper recycling programs such as this across the country. Many thanks to Clock Tower Place and to Maynard High School for generously giving us the right to use their property for the container. Please tell all your friends, Maynard co-workers, and neighbors about the bin. If you would like to "pledge your paper" to the Maynard Community Chest, or have already been dropping your paper off in either of our recycling containers, e-mail us to let us know. In return for your pledge, we will send you a reminder fridge magnet and add you to our e-mail update list which will keep you informed of the Community Chest’s current initiatives and news about the agencies we support. E-mail addresses are not shared and are only used for internal purposes.
